Michel Durcuil

Generations of artists have been attracted to the south of France with its brilliant light and colour.

In his two paintings of Provence, Durcuil has approached his subjects from unusual angles, using both high and low vantage points, cropping structures and compressing the compositions tightly within the margins.

The strong Mediterranean sun flattens objects, at the same time producing deep shadows. This has allowed Durcuil to concentrate on the resulting shapes and patterns. A feeling of warmth is suggested by the bleached walls of the houses and jetty, punctuated by white boats, sails and dappled light balanced against the cool colours of the sea and vines.
