ROBERT HANNAFORD
November 2007 – March 2008
Robert Hannaford is one of South Australia’s best known and critically acclaimed living artists and one of the nation’s pre-eminent portrait painters. Drawing on studio traditions which extend from the 17th century work of Rembrandt and Velasquez to the present day and on drawing and painting skills inspired by the Hans Heysen and Ivor Hele, Hannaford has carved out a remarkable career as an artist, with an impressive technical range matched by an eye for the human dimension within everyday sights and experiences. This will be the first time a comprehensive selection of many of the best works of Robert Hannaford will have been brought together to comprise a major, survey exhibition. The selection of paintings and drawings will reflect the artist’s diverse interests and talents particularly in the areas of portraiture, landscape and still life. The artwork will be complemented by relevant materials and artifacts such as sketchbooks, memorabilia and photographs to provide additional insights into Hannaford’s life and work as an artist.
Natural Eye: the art of Robert Hannaford
Wakefield Press, published November 2007
The book that accompanies the exhibition will, through text and colour illustrations, draw a wide net in terms of providing a chronology of development and documenting key works including a number not able to be included in the Carrick Hill exhibition. The book’s essay will document and analyse not only Hannaford’s development and achievements but will also the artistic context in which the artist’s work is positioned, a context which recognizes the uniqueness and diversity of a regional South Australian landscape and figurative studio tradition. Features of the essay are insights into the artist’s philosophies and working methods.
